I’m having quite a peculiar problem: after I install a Linux distribution, my Windows 7 desktop icons and files don’t show up anymore on the desktop. The files and icons are not gone, they’re still on the hard drive, they just don’t show. I’ve tested this over and over again, doing a fresh Windows 7 installation, and afterwards installing Linux Mint, Kubuntu, and Opensuse. With the same outcome. Any ideas, people? Or did I find a bug in Windows 7?

Test updates for Windows 7 Beta
This is from the Windows Team Blog:
“Starting February 24, we will be releasing up to 5 test updates to PCs running the Windows 7 Beta (Build 7000) via Windows Update. These updates allow us to test and verify our ability to deliver and manage the updating of Windows 7. We typically verify servicing scenarios during a beta.
Windows 7 Beta users will be notified that new updates are available beginning February 24 through Windows Update. Even if the user has Windows Update configured for automatic update – these test updates will not install automatically. Users will need to manually install the test updates through Windows Update.
These updates do not deliver new features or bug fixes. The test updates simply replace system files with the same version of the file currently on the system.”
I’ve been running the Windows 7 Beta next to Linux Mint for a couple of weeks now, without any problems.
Windows 7: remove ‘Send Feedback’
If you want to remove the ‘Send Feedback’ link in every toolbar in the recently released Windows 7 beta 1, here’s what you need to do:
Copy and paste this into Notepad:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop]
“FeedbackToolEnabled”=dword:00000000
Save the file as remove_send_feedback_link.reg.
Double click on it to merge it into the registry. Confirm any UAC prompts.
Reboot. Done!
The Windows key on your keyboard
Most computer keyboards nowadays have a Windows key on it, unless you’re using a Mac that is. There are a few handy things you can do with it if you’re running some version of the Windows operating system.
Win + D shows the desktop. Press again to return.
Win + E opens a file browser.
Win + F opens the find file window.
Win + L locks the screen.
Win + R opens the “run” box.
