Most computer keyboards nowadays have a Windows key on it, unless you’re using a Mac that is. There are a few handy things you can do with it if you’re running some version of the Windows operating system.
Win + D shows the desktop. Press again to return.
Win + E opens a file browser.
Win + F opens the find file window.
Win + L locks the screen.
Win + R opens the “run” box.
As you may know or not know, movies get their release on to the internet through release groups. If you browse the movies section of The Pirate Bay for instance, you’ll notice names like DiAMOND, FSG, FLAiTE and so on. Those are the names of the groups who released those movies into the wild (not the people who are spreading it through bittorrent or other p2p). They’re not in it to gain a quick buck, they want to be the first to have a certain movie out, or have a better quality version out than a competing group. The release groups have their own releasing standards, an interesting read if you’re into the technical side of things. But releases can also be nuked if there’s something wrong with them. VideoLAN is an excellent multimedia player with it’s own plugins for playing different formats, so it doesn’t need any codecs to be installed. It works great for previewing partially downloaded files too as well as DVDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols. Linux Mint is a linux distribution based on Ubuntu but with a custom desktop and menus, several unique configuration tools, a web-based package installation interface, and a number of different editions. They try to provide an elegant Linux desktop, with a lively community and user interaction. I’ve been using Linux Mint 5 Elyssa since the release candidates, and it’s by far my top choice if you’re looking for a GNOME-based distribution. So download the .iso, burn it and give it a try!

OpenOffice.org is a free and powerful office suite. The look and feel might be a bit less intuitive compared to Microsoft’s Office suite, but it suits my needs. I’ve had a lot of problems using the image uploader in WordPress 2.5, but adding this code to the .htaccess file in my WordPress folder solved it.
UPDATE: There’s now also a plugin that does the same thing.
